Night surcharge: what is it and how to calculate it?

Nighttime pay is a right guaranteed to workers under Brazilian law, but do you know how it works and what it really is?

Today we will learn more about the nighttime supplement, how it can be calculated and what is contained in the CLT regarding this subject.

What is nighttime additional?

The nighttime bonus is a benefit, which is more of a right labor, provided to workers who work between 10pm and 5am.

This is done as a form of recognition for workers, because work done at night, which would be rest time, is considered more exhausting.

It is a way of recognizing dedication to the work done in which, normally, most people use it to rest.

In this case, the worker will receive his salary and an extra bonus to compensate for his different working hours.

Unlike the hours in a normal working day, the night shift is not counted as 60 minutes, but rather as 52 minutes and 30 seconds.

Types of night shift schedule

In nighttime additional, you can find some different hours, depending on the type of work.

If it occurs in large metropolitan areas, the journey is from 10pm until 5am the following day. While in rural areas or in agriculture-related work, the working day starts at 9pm at night.

Finally, if the work is carried out in livestock farming, the night shift starts at 8pm at night.

How to calculate?

The nighttime hour worked is worth 20% more than the daytime hour normally worked.

And to obtain the hourly rate, it is necessary to make a first basic calculation: divide the monthly amount paid to the worker by the monthly hours worked, the result will be the hourly rate.

And since we know that the hour is worth 20% more, multiply the hour value by 0.2 and add the result to the hour value again, the result will be the value of the night hour.

Example: (20 * 0,2) + 20 = 24

Finally, to finalize this calculation, you will need to multiply the nightly hourly rate by the monthly hours you worked. So it would be: 24 * 200 = R$4,800, added to the value of your salary.

What is contained in the CLT regarding the nighttime supplement?

The nighttime bonus, as well as the night shift, are included in the CLT as other labor rights.

At CLT, from article 73, we can find all the information and determinations of the rules regarding night shifts, such as the determination of the additional amount, which is 20%.

Another point mentioned in the CLT is that the night time ends up being computed as 52 minutes and 30 seconds.

It is essential to have a clear understanding of the night shift premium, as it directly impacts workers' remuneration.

But more than that, the night shift ends up impacting a series of physical and emotional aspects, which can lead to stress and health problems.
