What is the cutoff score?

Used in university and college selection processes, the term cut-off score means the minimum limit of points that a candidate must have in order to be classified to enter the university.

Depending on the type of course, the cutoff score may change according to different factors, which take into account the number of vacancies, average performance of candidates, amount of competition and the admission rules themselves.

The idea is that only candidates who reach or exceed this minimum score can move on to the next phase of the selection process or guarantee their place.

Remembering that reaching the cut-off score does not necessarily mean that you will enter, because the number of effective places that the university has for the course must be considered.

Furthermore, admission to college may depend on the modality in which you are competing, which could be:

  • Broad competition;
  • 1 place for people in a refugee or political asylum situation;
  • Transsexual and transgender candidates;
  • Quota for black people;
  • Quota for disabled people;
  • And quota for people who have studied their entire secondary education in a public school.
